Cory Heins is shown at the controls of a directional drilling machine, left, being used by LTL Contracting Ltd. to install a 30-inch water main underneath Highway 61 near Rosslyn Road. The machine drills a four-inch pilot hole 105 feet to the other side of the highway. A 38-inch reamer is attached, as is the 105-foot length of pipe, which is drilled through and back to the other side of the road. Use of the directional drill is faster than traditional methods, takes less manpower and avoids ripping up the road and having to reroute traffic. Right, LTL crews prepare the water main pipe to be pulled beneath the highway. The main is a new line running to the Bowater mill.
